01. Usage Of Important Terms

Before you read tenses must understand these important terms and how to use them. If you don’t understand & don’t know how to use them, you will stuck again and again while speaking and writing English.

Difference between “a/an” and “the”

A/An

  • “a/an” are indefinite articles. These are used to refer to non-specific noun or group.
  • “An” is only used with those singular nouns which start with vowel i.e “a”, “e”, “i”,” o”, “u” OR  nouns starting with silent “h” like, an hour.

For Example:

  • A book.    (ایک کتاب). (Here we don’t know which book. We are talking about any book.)
  • She needs a doll. (اسے گڑیا کی ضرورت ہے). (Here we don’t know which doll)
  • Shiza needs an umbrella. (شیزا کو چھتری کی ضرورت ہے ). (Here we don’t know which umbrella.)

The

  • “The” is definite article.
  • “The” is used to refer a specific or individual noun.

For Example:

  • We had watched the 2019 Cricket World Cup. (ہم نے 2019 کرکٹ ورلڈ کپ دیکھا تھا). (Here you can see that we are talking about a specific event, 2019 Cricket World Cup.)
  • I am very thankful to the friend who helped me. (میں اس دوست کا بہت شکر گزار ہوں جس نے میری مدد کی) ( Here we are talking about a specific friend who helped me.)
  • The Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan. (عمران خان ، وزیر اعظم پاکستان). (Here we are talking about Imran Khan who is the Prime Minister of Pakistan.)
  • The Indus river. (دریائے سندھ۔). (There is only one river Indus in the world.)

Difference Between “there” & “their”

There

  • There is used to indicate a place.
  • It is used as introductory word in sentences when there is no subject or clear subject.
  • It is also used to introduce new information or something that exists.
  • In some sentences its meaning does not exist.
  • Urdu meanings of “there” are (ایسے، وہاں، وہیں، موجود ).

For Example:

  • You stay there. (تم وہیں رہو). (Here “there” is indicating a place.)
  • Get away from there. (وہاں سے چلے جاؤ). (Here “there” is indicating a place.)
  • There are people in the world who love humanity. (دنیا میں ایسے لوگ ہیں جو انسانیت سے محبت کرتے ہیں). (Here you can see that “there” is introducing a subject. “People” is subject in the sentence.)
  • He is always there to help me. (وہ ہمیشہ میری مدد کے لئے موجود ہوتا ہے).
  • There is no way. (کوئی راستہ نہیں ہے). (Here you can see that there is no subject.)
  • There are three books on the table. (ٹیبل پہ تین کتابیں ہیں ). (Here you can see that it is used to introduce books on the table. In this sentence there is no meaning of “there”.)

Their

  • “Their” is the plural of “his/her”. It is used to show  belonging or possession. Urdu meaning of “their” is (ان کی، ان کا، ان کے).

For Example:

  • It is their home.  (یہ ان کا گھر ہے). (Here you can see that “their” is showing a possession.)
  • The certificate will encourage their children to work hard. (سرٹیفکیٹ سے ان کے بچوں کو سخت محنت کرنے کی ترغیب ملے گی).
  •  It allows people to make their own choices. (یہ لوگوں کو ان کی اپنی پسند کا انتخاب کرنے کی سہولت دیتا ہے)

Difference Between “its” & “it’s”

Its

  • “its” is used to show something belongs to or relates to a thing previously mentioned. Urdu meaning of “its” is (اس کے، اس کی، اپنے، اپنی ).

For Example:

  • The government will continue to promote its new program. (حکومت اپنے نئے پروگرام کو فروغ دینا جاری رکھے گی). (Here you can see that “its” is used to indicate government.)
  • The city should do its best to attract tourists. (سیاحوں کو راغب کرنے کے لئے شہر کو اپنی پوری کوشش کرنی چاہئے). (Here you can see that “its” is used to refer “city”.)
  • World and its economy. (دنیا اور اس کی معیشت). (Here you can see that “its” refers to “world”.)

It’s

  • It’s is the short form of “it is”. Urdu meaning of “it’s” is (یہ ہے).

For Example:

  • It’s a book.  (یہ ایک کتاب ہے).
  • It’s running very fast. (یہ بہت تیز چل رہا ہے).
  • It’s just a car. (یہ تو بس ایک کار ہے).

Difference Between “then” & “than”

Then

  • “Then” means “next”,”therefore”, “afterwards”, “besides”, “subsequently” etc. Urdu meaning of “then” is (پھر , تب).

For Example:

  • I will go to university first and then I will go to gym.  (میں پہلے یونیورسٹی جاؤں گا اور پھر میں جم جاؤں گا).
  • When she helped me then I realized that how good she is. (جب اس نے میری مدد کی تب مجھے احساس ہوا کہ وہ کتنی اچھی ہے)

Than

  • “Than” is used to compare first element with the second.
  • “Than” is used with “more” or “less” to compare numbers or amounts.
  •  Urdu meaning of  “than” is ( مقابلے، سے   )

For Example

  • Irfan is taller than Afridi.  (عرفان آفریدی سے لمبا ہے)
  • Meer Basit has earned more than $5,000 last month. (میئر باسط نے گذشتہ ماہ  $5000 سے زیادہ کی کمائی کی ہے).
  • Children younger than 12 months of age.  ( بارہ ماہ سے کم عمر کے بچے)
  • Shiza resigned after less than two years on the job. (نوکری پر دو سال سے بھی کم عرصہ بعد شیزا نے استعفیٰ دے دیا).

Use Of “Make”

  • Make is one of the most used word and verb in English. People often get stuck while translating Urdu to English translation because they don’t know the usage of “make”. 2nd and 3rd form of “make” is “made”.
  • Urdu meaning of “make” is: (بنائیں، بناتا، کرآو، کروآؤ، بھرواؤ،  پڑتا  وغیرہ)

For Example:

  • He makes a cup of tea. (وہ ایک کپ چائے بناتاہے).
  • Make an easy load of 100 rupees for me. (میرے لئے 100 روپے کاایزی لوڑ کرواؤ).
  • Make a petrol fill of 1000 rupees to my car.  (میری کار میں 1000 روپے کا پٹرول بھروآؤ ).
  • It does not make any difference.  (اس سے کوئی فرق نہیں پڑتا)

Use Of “Ing”

  • There are 2 uses of “ing”. One use of  “ing” is to make a verb continuous like “I run fast (میں تیز بھاگتا ہوں)” will be “I am running fast (میں تیزی بھاگ رہا ہوں)”.You will learn in detail about use of “ing” with verb in tenses below.
  • The second use of “ing” is to denote a verbal action. Most of the Urdu words end with (  تےہوۓ وغیرہ ).
  • While staying at home I was thinking. (گھر میں رہتے ہوئے میں سوچ رہا تھا)
  • I was thinking about Shiza while walking. (میں چلتے ہوئے شیزا کے بارے میں سوچ رہا تھا )
  • Wash rice under cold running water.   (ٹھنڈے بہتے ہوئے پانی کے نیچے چاول دھوئیں)
  • I have learned a lot about running a business. (میں نے کاروبار چلانے کے بارے میں بہت کچھ سیکھا ہے)

Difference Between “That” & “Which”

Most of the people don’t know when yo use “that” & when to to use “which” because these words cause lot of confusion. If you understand the difference between “a” and “the” it will be much easier for you to understand the difference between them.

That

  • Use “that” in a “defining clause”. Defining clauses give essential information about the main noun.
  • “That” is used for referring a specific thing previously mentioned, known, or understood.

For Example:

  • That girl who helped you.          ( وہ لڑکی جس نے آپ کی مدد کی)
  • He had the experience that changed his life.     (اسے ایسا تجربہ ملا جس نے اس کی زندگی بدل دی)
  • The woman that owns the car.         (وہ عورت جو کار کی مالک ہے)
  • The students that are part of the drama.         (طلباء جو ڈرامے کا حصہ ہیں)

Which

  • Use “which” in a non-defining clause.
  • Non-defining clauses do not define nouns. They don’t limit the meaning of the sentence.

For Example:

  • A meeting in Islamabad which ended on Friday.      (اسلام آباد میں ایک اجلاس جمعہ کو ختم ہوا )
  • He had to leave, which was very difficult.        (اسے چھوڑنا پڑا ، جو بہت مشکل تھا)
  • The devices, which can’t be removed, are relatively safe.  (وہ آلات ، جنہیں نہیں ہٹایا جاسکتا ، نسبتا محفوظ ہیں)

01. The Present Tense

There are 4 types of Present Tense:

  1. Present Indefinite Tense
  2. Present Continuous Tense
  3. Present Perfect Tense
  4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

01. The Present Indefinite Tense

It is also called Present Simple Tense. It is a very important tense, so give maximum time to this tense. Present Indefinite Tense shows when an action happens now or it happens constantly or regularly as a hobby.

Active Voice

In Present Indefinite active voice Urdu sentences end with ( تاہے، تی ہے،  تے ہیں، تا، ہوں، تیں وغیرہ  ).

Formula:

  • We add “s” & “es” to verb with the third person singular i.e “He”, “She”, “It”.
  • In below sentences “like”, “buy”, “work” and “go” are verbs.

For Example:

  • She likes chocolates.    وہ چاکلیٹ پسند کرتی ہے
  • Ahmed(He) buys vegetable.   احمد سبزی خریدتا ہے
  • Machine(It) works very well.      مشین بہت اچھی طرح سے کام کرتی ہے
  • He goes to school.       وہ اسکول جاتا ہے

Formula:

  • We do not add “s” & “es” to verb with first & second person i.e “I”, “We”.
  • We do not add “s” & “es” to verb with third person plural i.e “They”, “Those”.
  • In below sentences “go”, “enjoy”, “do” are verbs.

For Example:

  • I go to London every year.    میں ہر سال لندن جاتا ہوں
  • We enjoy summer holidays.      ہم گرمیوں کی تعطیلات سے لطف اندوز ہوتے ہیں
  • They do work everyday.     وہ روزانہ کام کرتے ہیں
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences we use “do not” with the “I”, “We”, “They”, “You”.

For Example:

  • I do not like them.              میں ان کو پسند نہیں کرتا
  • They do not come to my home.       وہ میرے گھر نہیں آتے ہیں
  • We do not run fast.                  ہم تیز نہیں بھاگتے
  • You do not deserve Maryam.          آپ مریم کے مستحق نہیں ہیں
  • Government servants(They) do not fulfill their duty.   سرکاری ملازمین اپنا فرض ادا نہیں کرتے ہیں

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences we use “does not” with “He”, “She”, “It”.
  • Remember that when you use “does” don’t add “s” or “es” to verb because when you add “es” to “do” it becomes “does”.
  •  In the 3 examples below you can see that we have not added “s” or “es” to verbs “like” & “dance”.

For Example:

  • Hasnain(He) does not like football.   حسنین کو فٹ بال پسند نہیں ہے
  • Sidra(She) does not go to dance parties.    سدرہ ڈانس پارٹیوں میں نہیں جاتی ہے
  • Microsoft(It) does not like Apple.    مائیکرو سافٹ کو ایپل پسند نہیں ہے
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice interrogative sentences “do” & “does” are used before the “subject”. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “do” & “does”.

For Example:

  • Do I need Erica Fernandes?       کیا مجھے ایریکا فرنینڈس کی ضرورت ہے
  • Does Umer(He) live in Lahore?        کیا عمر لاہور میں رہتا ہے
  • Do they go to Naran?            کیا وہ ناران جاتے ہیں
  • In what ways do you think she is pretty?       آپ کا کیا خیال ہے کہ وہ خوبصورت ہے
  • How do they reach Karachi?               وہ کیسے کراچی پہنچتے ہیں
  • How do we help poor?       ہم کس طرح غریبوں کی مدد کرتے ہیں

Passive Voice

In Present Indefinite passive voice Urdu sentences end with  ( جاتاہے، جاتی ہے، جاتا، جاتی، جاتےہیں، جاتی ہیں وغیرہ )

Formula:

  • In Present Indefinite passive voice we use “is”, “am”, “are” with 3rd form of verb.
  • We use “is” with “he”, “she”, “it”.
  • We use “am” with “I”.
  • We use “are” with “You”, “We”, “They”, “Those”.

For Example:

  • Aslam(He) is told not to tease the girls.    اسلم سے کہا جاتا ہے کہ وہ لڑکیوں کو تنگ نہ کریں
  • I am asked to pay the rent.            مجھے کرایہ ادا کرنے کو کہا جاتاہے
  • They are asked to help neighbors.      ان سے ہمسایوں  کی مدد کرنے کو کہا جاتا ہے
  • Soldiers(They) are killed.             سپاہی مارے جاتے ہیے
  • It is advised to stay away from crowd.     ہجوم سے دور رہنے کا مشورہ دیا جاتا ہے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice negative sentences “not” is used between “is”, “am”, “are” and the main verb.

For example:

  • Amna is not taught French.     آمنہ کو فرانسیسی نہیں پڑھائی جاتی ہے
  • You are not asked for help.   آپ سے مدد نہیں مانگی جاتی
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice interrogative sentences “is”, “am”, “are” are used before the subject. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “is”, “am”, “are”.

For example:

  • Why they are asked bizarre questions?     ان سے عجیب و غریب سوال کیوں پوچھے جاتے ہیں
  • Are we invited in the party?      کیا ہمیں پارٹی میں مدعو کیا جاتاہے
  • Is Shiza called for an interview?     کیا شیزا کو انٹرویو کے لئے بلایا جاتاہے

02. The Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous Tense is used for an action that is unfinished, actions happening now or an ongoing present action. This tense is simple to understand.

Active Voice

In Present Continuous Tense active voice Urdu Sentences end with  (رہاہوں، رہی ہوں، رہےہیں وغیرہ).

Formula:

  • We use “is”, “am”, ” are” before verb. We add “ing” to the 1st form of verb.

For Example:

  • They are running very fast.       وہ بہت تیز چل رہے ہیں
  • He is going to meet his parents.       وہ اپنے والدین سے ملنے جا رہا ہے
  • I am walking very slowly.       میں بہت آہستہ چل رہا ہوں.
  • It is going very fast.          یہ بہت تیز چل رہا ہے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences “not” is used between “is”, “am”, “are” and the main verb.

For Example:

  • He is not going to school.        وہ اسکول نہیں جا رہا ہے
  • They are not listening to teacher.      وہ استاد کی بات نہیں سن رہے ہیں
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice interrogative sentences  “is”, “am”, “are” are used before the subject. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “is”, “am”, “are”.

For Example:

  • Are we going to Gilgit this year?         کیا ہم اس سال گلگت جارہے ہیں
  • Am I looking gorgeous?                    کیا میں خوبصورت لگ رہا ہوں
  • Is Maryam looking for her brother?       کیا مریم اپنے بھائی کی تلاش کر رہی ہے
  • What people are doing there?                لوگ وہاں کیا کر رہے ہیں
  • Which athlete is going to join the Olympics?     اولمپکس میں کون سا ایتھلیٹ حصہ لینے جارہا ہے

Passive Voice

Formula:

  • In Present Continuous Tense passive voice “being” is used after “is”, “am”, “are” with the “3rd” form of verb.

For Example:

  • We are being invited to party.          ہمیں پارٹی میں مدعو کیا جارہا ہے
  • He is being loved by his grandparents.     اسے اپنے نانا نانی سے پیار مل رہا ہے
  • Azaan is being said.          اذان دی جارہی ہے
  • I am being awarded tomorrow.       مجھے کل نوازا جا رہا ہے
  • It is being saved in your computer.     یہ آپ کے کمپیوٹر میں محفوظ ہو رہا ہے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice negative sentences “not” is used between “is”, “am”, “are” and “being”. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “is”, “am”, “are”.

For Example:

  • Cricket team is not being sent to England.       کرکٹ ٹیم کو انگلینڈ نہیں بھیجا جارہا ہے
  • Children are not being taught English.    بچوں کو انگریزی نہیں پڑھائی جا رہی ہے
  • Technology is not being used in rural areas.    دیہی علاقوں میں ٹیکنالوجی کا استعمال نہیں کیا جارہا ہے
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice interrogative sentences  “is”, “am”, “are” are used before the subject. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “is”, “am”, “are”.

For Example:

  • Why poor are not being given the chance?       غریبوں کو کیوں موقع نہیں دیا جارہا ہے
  • Why my guests are not being served well here?    یہاں میرے مہمانوں کی اچھی خدمت کیوں نہیں کی جارہی ہے
  • Why Police is being called?           پولیس کیوں طلب کی جارہی ہے
  • Which products are being made of leather?     کون سی مصنوعات چمڑے سے بنائ جارہیں ہیں
  • Why I am being asked to wait here?     مجھ سے کیوں یہاں انتظار کرنے کو کہا جارہا ہے

03. The Present Perfect Tense

The Present Perfect Tense is used to show an action that has been recently finished or completed or the action that has been started in the past and continues in the present.

Formula:

  • We use “has” with “He”, “She” & “It”.
  • We use “have” with “I”, “You”, “We”, “They”.

Active Voice

In Present Perfect Tense active voice Urdu sentences end with  (چکاہے، چکی ہے، چکاہوں، چکےہیں، ٹھاہوں، ٹھےہیں، داہے، لیاہے، کیاہے، گۓہيں وغیرہ)

Formula:

  • In Present Perfect Tense active voice we use “has” & “have” with the “3rd” form of verb.

For Example:

  • I have done my home work.        میں اپنے گھر کا کام کرچکاہوں
  • I have bought two cars.         میں نے دو کاریں خریدی ہیں
  • He has completed his master’s degree.    اکرم نے اپنے ماسٹر کی ڈگری مکمل کی ہے
  • They have made the movie.     انہوں نے فلم بنائی ہے
  • We have crossed the river.     ہم  دریا عبور کرچکےہیں
  • You have broken the rules.     تم قواعد توڑ چکے ہو
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences “not” is used after the “has”, “have” and before the verb.

For Example:

  • I have not told the truth.       میں نے سچ نہیں بتایا
  • He has not sold his old car.      اس نے اپنی پرانی کار فروخت نہیں کی ہے
  • You have not fulfilled your promise.      آپ نے اپنا وعدہ پورا نہیں کیاہے
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice interrogative sentences “has” & “have” are used before the subject. The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc, are placed before “has”, have”.

For Example:

  • Has Haleema passed the interview?   کیا حلیمہ نے انٹرویو پاس کیا ہےکیا حلیمہ انٹرویو پاس کرچکی ہے
  • Has she got the first position in class?    کیا اسے کلاس میں پہلی پوزیشن ملی ہے
  • Have they appeared before the judge?     کیا وہ جج کے سامنے پیش ہوئے ہیں
  • Why she fell in love with Basit?           کیوں اسکو باسط سے پیار ہوا
  • How Raheela managed to win his heart?      کس طرح راحیلہ اس کا دل جیتنے میں کامیاب ری

Passive Voice

Formula:

  • In Present Perfect Tense passive voice “has been”, “have been” are used after the object with 3rd form of verb.

For Example:

  • The soldier has been sent to border twice.     سپاہی کو دو بار بارڈر پر بھیجا گیا ہے
  • It has been a long time since I left my city.    مجھے اپنے شہر کو چھوڑے بہت عرصہ ہوچکا ہے
  • They have been asked to reach the office.       انھیں آفس پہنچنے کو کہا گیا ہے
  • These areas have been included in our country.     ان علاقوں کو ہمارے ملک میں شامل کیا گیا ہے
  • I have been told to avoid lazy people.           مجھے سست لوگوں سے بچنے کے لئے کہا گیا ہے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice negative sentences “not” is used between “has”, “have” & “been”.

For Example:

  • We have not been invited in the function.     ہمیں تقریب میں مدعو نہیں کیا گیا ہے
  • You have not been promoted to grade 18.    آپ کو گریڈ 18 میں ترقی نہیں دی گئی ہے
  • They have not been trained to win.         انہیں جیتنے کی تربیت نہیں دی گئی ہے
  • I have not been questioned for failure.       مجھ سے ناکامی پر پوچھ گچھ نہیں کی گئی ہے
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In passive voice interrogative sentences “has”, “have” are used before the object, “been” is used between the “object” & “verb”.
  • The other question words like “why”, “what”, “where”, “how” etc are placed before “has”, have”.

For Example:

  • Has Usman been told to keep the book?          کیا عثمان کو کتاب رکھنے کو کہا گیا ہے
  • Has the mirror been broken by throwing stones?     کیا پتھر پھینک کر آئینہ توڑدیاگیاہے
  • Have they been asked to reach the office?       کیا انھیں آفس پہنچنے کو کہا گیا ہے
  • Have these areas been included in our country?      کیا ان علاقوں کو ہمارے ملک میں شامل کیا گیا ہے
  • Have I been asked to avoid lazy people?    کیا مجھے سست لوگوں سے بچنے کے لئے کہا گیا ہے
  • Has he been asked to dance in the party?      کیا اسے پارٹی میں رقص کرنے کو کہا گیا ہے
  • Why have my guests been asked to work?    میرے مہمانوں سے کیوں کام کرنے کو کہا گیا ہے
  • How has he been told about the truth?          اسے سچائی کے بارے میں کیسے بتایا گیا ہے
  • Where have jewels been kept in the city?        شہر میں زیورات کہاں رکھے گئے ہیں

04. The Present Perfect Continuous Tense

The Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show an action that started in the past, continued to present or just finished recently.  There is no PASSIVE VOICE in Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Active Voice

In Present Prefect Continuous Tense  active voice Urdu sentences end with (تارہی ہوں، تارہاہوں، تےرہےہو، تی رہی ہو، تےرہےہیں، تے رہی ہیں وغیرہ)

Formula:

  • We use “has been”, “have been” and add “ing” with the 1st form of verb.
  • “Since” & “For” are used as time reference to show that when the action started in the past or for how long the action continued.
  • “Since” is used when you know the exact starting time like “Since 2009”, “Since 6:00 AM”, “Since Thursday” etc.
  • “For” is used for a period of time, amount of time like “for last five years”, “for last 2 hours”, “for 6 months” etc.

02. The Past Tense

There are 4 types of Past Tense:

  • The Past Indefinite Tense
  • The Past Continuous Tense
  • The Past Perfect Tense
  • The Past Perfect Continuous Tense

01. The Past Indefinite Tense

The Past Indefinite Tense is also called Simple Past Tense. The Past Indefinite Tense is used to show an action that has been completed in the past, but it does not tell exactly at what time the action completed, and that’s why it is called Past indefinite.

Active Voice

In the Past Indefinite Tense active voice Urdu sentences end with ( گۓ، گئں، گیا، گئ، دا، دی، کیا، لی، لیا، ڑا وغیرہ )

Formula:

  • We use the “2nd” form of the verb after the “subject”.
  • With “did” we use the “1st” form of verb.

For Example:

Formula:

  • In passive voice we use “was”, “were” with the “3rd” form of the verb.
  • We use “was” with “He”, “She”, “It”, “I”.
  • We use “were” with “They”, “We”, “You”, “Those”.

The Past Continuous Tense is used to describe an ongoing action of the past.

Active Voice

In Past Continuous Tense active voice Urdu sentences end with (رہےتھے، رہی تھی ، رہا تھا،  وغیرہ).

Formula:

  • We use “was”, “were” with “1st” form of verb and add “ing” to it.

For Example:

  • I was helping them in assignment.      میں اسائنمنٹ میں ان کی مدد کررہا تھا
  • He was running very fast but he lost the race.    وہ بہت تیز دوڑ رہا تھا لیکن وہ ریس ہار گیا

The Past Perfect Tense is used to show one action happened before another in the past OR action that completed in the past before a defined time.

In Past Perfect Tense most of the Urdu sentences end with (چکی تھی، چکاتھا ،ہواتھا، گیاتھا، گئ تھی، ملا تھا،  وغیرہ)

Formula:

  • We use “had” after the “subject” with “3rd” from of the verb.

For Example:

  • I had met him before the competition.       مقابلہ سے قبل میں ان سے مل چکا تھا
  • She had told about her secret to parents.     اس نے والدین کو اپنے راز سے آگاہ کیا تھا

The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show an action that started in the past and continued for sometime in the past. There is no PASSIVE VOICE in Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

In Past Perfect Continuous Tense active voice most of the Urdu sentences end with (تارہاتھا، تارہی  تھی، تے رہے تھے، وغیرہ ).

Formula:

  • We use “had” after the “subject” and add “ing” in the “1st” form of verb.

For Example:

  • I had been preparing CSS exams for last 2 years.   میں پچھلے 2 سالوں سے سی ایس ایس امتحانات کی تیاری کرتا رہا تھا

  • Will there be any classes in the afternoon?    کیا دوپہر کو کوئی کلاس ہوگی
  • Where will he be sent from Islamabad?    اسے اسلام آباد سے کہاں بھیجا جائے گا
  • How will Shiza be treated well?    شیزا کے ساتھ اچھا سلوک کیسے ہوگا

02. The Future Continuous Tense

It is used to show an action that continues in the future which has not been finished. There is no PASSIVE VOICE in Future Continuous Tense.

Active Voice

In Future Continuous Tense most of the Urdu sentences end with ( رہےہوں گے،رہی ہوں گی، وغیرہ ).

Formula:

  • We use “will be” and add “ing” with the “1st” form of the verb.

For Example:

  • I will be doing practice tomorrow.       میں کل پریکٹس کررہا ہوں گا
  • Shiza will be preparing CSS exams next week.  شیزا اگلے ہفتے سے سی ایس ایس کے امتحانات کی تیاری کررہی ہو گی
  • It will be adding more energy to our project.  اس سے ہمارے منصوبے میں مزید توانائی شامل ہورہی ہوگی
  • They will be asking to help them in fund raising.  وہ فنڈ اکٹھا کرنے میں ان کی مدد کے لئے کہ رہے ہوں گے
  • We will be missing our trip to Gilgit.    ہم اپنے گلگت کا سفر یاد کرہے ہوں گے
  • You will be missing your beautiful wife.   تم اپنی خوبصورت بیوی کو یاد کررہے ہوں گے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences “not” is used in between “will” & “be”.

For Example:

  • I will not be doing practice tomorrow.        میں کل پریکٹس نہیں کررہا ہوں گا
  • Shiza will not be preparing CSS exams next week.  شیزا اگلے ہفتے سی ایس ایس امتحانات کی تیاری نہیں کر رہی ہو گی
  • It will not be adding more energy to our project.    اس سے ہمارے منصوبے میں مزید توانائی شامل نہیں  ہورہی ہوگی
  • You will not be missing your psycho wife.   آپ کو اپنی نفسیاتی بیوی کی کمی محسوس نہیں ہورہی ہوگی
Interrogative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice interrogative sentences we use “will” before the subject. We use the question words like “how”, “why”, “when”, “where” before “will”.

For Example:

  • Will I not be doing practice tomorrow?       کیا میں کل پریکٹس نہیں کررہا ہوں گا
  • Will Shiza be preparing IAS exams next week?   کیا شیزا اگلے ہفتے سی ایس ایس امتحانات کی تیاری کررہی ہوگی
  • Will it not be adding more energy to our project?   کیا اس سے ہمارے منصوبے میں مزید توانائی شامل نہیں ہورہی ہوگی
  • How will you be missing your psycho wife?  کیسےآپ کو اپنی نفسیاتی بیوی کی کمی محسوس ہورہی ہوگی
  • Where will they be finding precious stones?  انہیں قیمتی پتھر کہاں سے مل رہے ہوں گے

03. The Future Perfect Tense

The Future Perfect Tense is used to show an action that is expected to complete or happen in future. It has a definitive end date.

Active Voice

In Future Perfect Tense most of the Urdu sentences end with ( چکےہوں گے، چکاہوں گا، چکی ہوگی، چکاہوگا، چکی ہوگی، چکیں گی، وغیرہ )

Formula:

  • We use “will have” with the the “3rd” form of the verb.

For Example:

  • I will have done my task by the time they reach.  جب تک وہ پہنچیں گے میں اپنا کام کر چکا ہوں گا
  • He will have arrived at the airport.    وہ ہوائی اڈے پر پہنچ چکا ہوگا
  • Olivia will have worked in movies.   اولیویا فلموں میں کام کر چکی ہوگی
  • They will have robbed the house before morning.    وہ صبح سے پہلے ہی گھر لوٹ چکے ہوں گے
  • We will have reached Gilgit if the road is not blocked.  اگر سڑک بلاک نہیں ہوئی تو ہم گلگت پہنچ چکےہوں گے
Negative Sentences

Formula:

  • In active voice negative sentences we use “not” in between “will” & “have”.

Passive Voice

In Future Perfect Tense passive voice most of the Urdu sentences end with (گیاہوگا، گئ ہوگی، گۓہوں گے، وغیرہ )

Formula:

  • We use “been” after “will have” with the “3rd” form of the verb.

For Example:

  • I will have been gone to exhibition.    میں نمائش کے لئے گیا ہوں گا
  • He will have been asked to visit school.   اسے اسکول جانے کے لئے کہا کیاہوگا
  • You will have been invited to her marriage.  آپ کو اس کی شادی میں مدعو کیا گیا ہوگا
  • They will have been asked to leave the house.  انہیں گھر چھوڑنے کے لئے کہا گیا ہوگا
  • We will have been taught English in school.    ہمیں اسکول میں انگریزی پڑھائی گئ ہو گی

04. The Future Perfect Continuous Tense

The Future Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show an action that will have been started in past or future and is expected to continue or finish in future. In Future Perfect Continuous Tense there is no PASSIVE VOICE.

Active Voice

In Future Perfect Continuous Tense active voice most of the Urdu sentences end with ( تےرہےہوںگے، تےرہی ہوںگی، تارہاہوگا، تارہی ہوگی، وغیرہ  )

Formula:

  • In Future Perfect Continuous Tense active voice we use “will have been” & add “ing” with the “1st” form of verb.

For Example:

  • I will have been going to library for 2 years.   میں 2 سال سے لائبریری جاتا رہا ہوںگا
  • Shiza will have been studying before the exams.  شیزا امتحانات سے پہلے پڑھتی رہی ہوگی
  • It will have been helping to increase revenue before you came.  یہ آپ کے آنے سے پہلے آمدنی میں اضافہ کرنے میں مدد کرتی رہی ہوگی
  • You will have been criticizing her attitude after she rejected you.  جب اس نے آپ کو مسترد کردیا تو آپ اس کے رویہ پر تنقید کرتے رہے ہوںگے
  • They will have been playing cricket before you reach.  وہ آپ کے پہنچنے سے پہلے کرکٹ کھیلتے رہے ہوں گے

04. Usage Of Could, Would & Should

You must have learned lot about 12 Tenses and now it must be much easier for you to understand these three important terms i.e “could”, “would” & “should”. We will explain the complete usage of these three terms with examples. Examples are both in active voice and passive voice.

01. Could

  • Could is the past tense of  “can”. It is used to show possibility or past possibility. Most of the Urdu sentences end with (سکتاہوں،  سکتا تھا، سکتا وغیرہ)

For Example:

  • I could do the exercise. (میں ورزش کرسکتا ہوں).
  • The exercise could be done. (ورزش کی جا سکتی ہے)
  • I could have done the exercise. (میں ورزش کرسکتا تھا)
  • The exercise could have been done. (ورزش کی جاسکتی تھی)
  • I wish I could do the exercise. (کاش میں ورزش کرسکتا)

02. Would

  • Would is the Past Tense of “will”. It is used to express conditional mood, hypothesis, polite wish, willingness etc. Most of the Urdu sentences end with ( گا، کروں گا، کہتا، بتاتا، کرتا، ہوجاتی , جائیں گے لیتا، ہوتی، چکا ہوتا، وغیرہ ).

For Example:

  • I would do the exercise. (میں ورزش کروں گا)
  • The exercise would be done. (ورزش ہو جائيگی)
  • I would have done the exercise. (میں ورزش کرلیتا)
  • The exercise would have been done. (ورزش ہو چکی ہوتی)
  • I would tell.   (میں بتاتا)
  • I would say. (میں کہتا)
  • Had Shiza got money she would have bought a car. (اگر شیزا کے پاس پیسے ہوتے تو وہ کار خرید لیتی)

03. Should

  • Should is the Past Tense of “shall”. It is used to express suggestion, advice, condition mood etc. Most of the Urdu words end with (چاہیے، چاہےتھا  وغیرہ).

For Example:

  • I should do the exercise.   (مجھے ورزش کرنی چاہئے)
  • The exercise should be done. (ورزش کرنی چاہئے)
  • I should have done the exercise. (مجھے ورزش کرنی چاہئے تھی)
  • The exercise should have been done. (ورزش کرنی چاہئے تھی)
  • Erica Fernandes should have married Meer Basit. (ایرکا فرنینڈس کو میر باسط سے شادی کرنی چاہئے تھی)
  • The Water issue should have been solved early. (پانی کا مسئلہ جلد حل ہونا چاہئے تھا)

05. How To Practice Tenses/English

Even if you understand 12 tenses completely you need lot of writing and speaking practice. It is the only way you can take full command over English and consolidate your grammar concepts.

If you seriously want to learn English you have to be brave and overcome fears. Once you start writing and speaking English you will feel really good and confident. English has the power to change you life & personality completely.
